The authors explain the Fourier transform and its applications, especially in signal and system theory. Based on their many years of teaching experience, they aim at helping especially STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) students as well as graduated professionals to better understand the subject. The authors also point out the importance of a deeper understanding, as all modern digital technologies such as sound and image recording and storage, radio and television, mobile telephony, signal transmission for the Internet, modern control techniques for vehicles or aircrafts - are largely based on the Fourier transform. This Springer essential is a translation of the original German 1st edition essentials, Fourier-Transformation zur Signal- und Systembeschreibung by Jörg Lange and Tatjana Lange, published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2019. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors. The Content Sine and cosine as building blocks for periodic functions; Fourier series and Fourier integral Fourier transform of standard signals, properties and approximate relationships Fourier transform for describing signals and systems and its application to stochastic signals Optimal receive filter (Wiener filter) The Authors Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Jörg Lange held a leading position in the development area of mobile communications in a large technology company. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Tatjana Lange taught control systems engineering at Merseburg University of Applied Sciences and is still active in research in the area of classification and cluster analysis.

The book targets undergraduate and postgraduate mathematics students and helps them develop a deep understanding of mathematical analysis. Designed as a first course in real analysis, it helps students learn how abstract mathematical analysis solves mathematical problems that relate to the real world. As well as providing a valuable source of inspiration for contemporary research in mathematics, the book helps students read, understand and construct mathematical proofs, develop their problem-solving abilities and comprehend the importance and frontiers of computer facilities and much more. It offers comprehensive material for both seminars and independent study for readers with a basic knowledge of calculus and linear algebra. The first nine chapters followed by the appendix on the Stieltjes integral are recommended for graduate students studying probability and statistics, while the first eight chapters followed by the appendix on dynamical systems will be of use to students of biology and environmental sciences. Chapter 10 and the appendixes are of interest to those pursuing further studies at specialized advanced levels. Exercises at the end of each section, as well as commentaries at the end of each chapter, further aid readers’ understanding. The ultimate goal of the book is to raise awareness of the fine architecture of analysis and its relationship with the other fields of mathematics.

This book provides an introduction to the theory and applications of point processes, both in time and in space. Presenting the two components of point process calculus, the martingale calculus and the Palm calculus, it aims to develop the computational skills needed for the study of stochastic models involving point processes, providing enough of the general theory for the reader to reach a technical level sufficient for most applications. Classical and not-so-classical models are examined in detail, including Poisson–Cox, renewal, cluster and branching (Kerstan–Hawkes) point processes. The applications covered in this text (queueing, information theory, stochastic geometry and signal analysis) have been chosen not only for their intrinsic interest but also because they illustrate the theory. Written in a rigorous but not overly abstract style, the book will be accessible to earnest beginners with a basic training in probability but will also interest upper graduate students and experienced researchers.
